Hi Scott, Sounds like a very big project to me. Good luck if you decide to tackle it. Have you tried asking your question on cruisersforum or sailboatowners? Lots of knowledgable folks at those two sites.

I am looking into a '77 Ranger 28 on a trailer that has a make-shift rudder (plywood and rudder post), and a keel that looks like it broke and is bolted through (very rough repair work). Sounds like the boat was washed up on a sandbar up in San Juans and jury rigged to make it back to where the boat currently lies in The Dalles, Oregon. The boat has been sitting at a crummy looking car dealership for over a year now, and I would hate to see it get scrapped. They are asking $2000 for the trailer, and have the boat 'listed' at $9000...one of the sales people said to make an offer for $4500 for the whole kit. I wouldn't pay anything over $2000.

Crispy Dacron 4 sail quiver w/ spin+gear - decent looking standing/running rigging - Solid deck, no soft spots, chain plates solid - interior is OK needs new floor installed, and new cushions - Atomic 4 recent tune-up runs.

Does anyone have any experience rebuilding/remounting keel and rudder on a Ranger 28 (or any other boat similar size)? What would be the max price to offer in your opinion???

Hello John,
Thanks for finding my website and taking the time to leave a comment. It is nice to hear from fellow sailors. Hope you are getting out as much as you can.

After re-reading my review, I did a little editing and also added that Bob Perry also designed the Freeport 36, which seems like a pretty nice sailboat too. And if I'm not mistaken Bob actually lived on one of those for awhile.

Anyways, to get back to your question. Late this fall we took some sailing friends out it 25+ knots, gusting higher. They started referring to our Islander 28 as "Super Boat" afterwards. I rather liked that! The more we sail her, the more we love her. If I was pressed to come up with something negative to say, the two things that come to mind is that I wish the icebox did not drain into the bilge and that I think I would have preferred anodizing for the mast and boom, rather than black paint.

On the other hand, paint is cheap and anodizing is not, when it comes time for refurbishing. In the 80's Islander changed the head layout to span across the entire beam, so that the vanity was on the port and the head to starboard. This gives a lot more room than what we have in our head. However, that arrangement does make the boat feel much smaller when hanging out in the saloon. Interestingly, the drawings we purchased from Mr. Perry showed the later layout for the head.

We are very pleased with our Islander 28 and look forward to many more seasons with her. Happy Sailing!

Great review. I am looking at a few similar Islanders and appreciated this more recent feedback. Now that you have had her for over a year, any additional comments?

I noticed that they had it for sale, their new boat is a looker too, a custom Herreshoff 43 I believe. There was another Hallberg Rassy 352 for sale up in Superior at Barker's Island last month that was keeping me awake at night. The listing is gone so perhaps some lucky sailor has a great new sailboat. Thanks for reading and the link.
